Morse and Monteith run around Philly with no discernible character development for either.

He’s just a brute who perhaps has somewhat of a heart, so it’s simply never clear what Mack wants. Cory Monteith in one of his last screen roles may be the best thing going for McCanick, a tired cop drama that recycles predictable narrative elements almost to the point of meaninglessness and then substitutes wildly improbable developments in place of actual originality.

He’s seen hitting a punching bag. He wants to find Simon not because he’s a murder suspect but for another reason.

Morse, at least, may get better chances to strut his stuff in future. If I were to compare the difference between my expectations based on his Glee persona and his performance in this role, to any other actor with a similar, abrupt growth spurt of acting chops, it would have to be what Heath Ledger accomplished in The Dark Knight Returns.
