It goes all shallow and unexplained until the very end, which, when it happens, just leaves you wondering why couldn’t you just skip until the end and saved yourself the trouble. Simon Wells is anything but sweet an loveable, as he’s been severally damaged by a life on the streets, but the question becomes just how bad a guy is he? The film is a character study of a cop losing grip. David Morse stars as your typical tough loner cop, whose life is all about the job. Primarily, the plot gets a little confusing and takes a bad turn.

When I think tough guy, David Morse is not the first person who comes to mind, but he has a history of playing both the good and the bad guy, making the role of Eugene McCanick perfect for him.
Morse and Monteith run around Philly with no discernible character development for either.

The movie is told with flashbacks to amplify the lies of our main character. Perhaps the secret that the lead was dealing with was concealed in a rather confusing fashion and made it hard to follow along but it is a ploy often used in the movies and doesn’t take away from the core theme of the story. David Morse is a messed up bad ass cop and self declaimed bad father with sppoilers shady character in this film, which is one of those spoilres keeps you in the dark, and slowly unravels what it’s all about.
It’s a must see for any fan of Cory, you owe it to yourself to see him at his prime. One is that it’s set mccanick my hometown of Philadelphia.

He’s just a brute who perhaps has somewhat of a heart, so it’s simply never clear what Mack wants. Cory Monteith in one of his last screen roles may be the best thing going for McCanick, a tired cop drama that recycles predictable narrative elements almost to the point of meaninglessness and then substitutes wildly improbable developments in place of actual originality.
He’s seen hitting a punching bag. The ability to transform and completely change who you are to create a character is a rare talent These two actors really give two amazing performances that are quite impressive. As the unhinged homicide detective with a past that he prefers to keep secret, David Morse is terrific as the eponymous protagonist McCanick. The reason is because Mack is a liar.

Worth the little bit of effort you will have to put forward to stay with this story to the end. The scheme of the cop involved – only in the end mccsnick in a homosexual matter, made me think of the french film.
McCanick is ordered to leave the situation alone, but he can’t rest while this man is on the street and McCanick goes looking for trouble. Simon says he’s not gay, but he does work as a hustler, having sex with men for money or drugs.
Anyway, this did not prevent me to appreciate, to love this bleak, dark, depressing story of a cop on the road to perdition. Traditional audiences that love film noir thrillers will enjoy this more than popcorn and beer spectators that want to see an action-packed epic. He wants to find Simon not because he’s a murder suspect but for another reason.
Morse, at least, may get better chances to strut his stuff in future. If I were to compare the difference between my expectations based on his Glee persona and his performance in this role, to any other actor with a similar, abrupt growth spurt of acting chops, it would have to be what Heath Ledger accomplished in The Dark Knight Returns.
The truth is revealed in the explosive finale, which culminates in a surprisingly emotional confrontation not just between McCanick and Weeks, but also between McCanick and himself. The entire film takes place in one hour period. Mack and his partner, Floyd, mercilessly hunt down Weeks for unknown reasons over the course of one long, hot day. What a sad, sad waste of a young life. The savage one, with no redemption at the end.
On the surface, McCanick is a simple story of a cop going after an ex-con who he has a history with. Morse especially carries this movie on his shoulders and runs with it, he’s very very good in this film.
The story is unique, and true, and the kind of story you want to see yanked up into the light.
Movies would like to see. Three Stars out of Five. The only thing that I did not like in this film was the ending.
